Forging our path to climate-neutral television

Streaming video content is becoming ever-more popular. The amount of data generated for streaming requires high volumes of power. This means that streaming generates CO2 emissions. As a TV streaming provider, this applies to us too. Yet, it's not only streaming that generates CO2, but also our company's operational activities. We know that we can contribute to the preservation of both our climate and our planet. We feel that we, as a company, are responsible for taking action.

1. Calculation

We calculate our CO2 footprint annually, together with ClimatePartner, a climate and environmental consultancy. This data reveals exactly how much CO2 we generate as a company.

2. Reduction

By analyzing our CO2 consumption, we can accurately assess which areas in our company require our attention and action going forward. We already operate all our data centers with green electricity. We even have our own data center situated directly inside a wind turbine.

3. Compensation

We compensate output which we don't save via reduction 100 percent. We support certified carbon offset projects for the same amount of CO2 that we generate annually.


With the assistance of ClimatePartner, a carbon offset solutions provider, we apply all our data to accurately determine how much CO2 our company generates. Our CO2 Footprint

In order to accurately determine our CO2 consumption, we need all the verified data from our business units for the preceding year. Therefore, the calculation for the current year can only be made at the end of the year ahead. Our current CO2 footprint is therefore based on data from 2019. In 2019, Zattoo's emissions came to

692 tonnes of CO2

Air travel is the largest source of emissions (34 percent). The second-largest source is our employees' daily commute to and from work, calculated at around 29 percent. The third-largest source is the collective data-center emission from supplier and customer operations, calculated at 18 percent. On the chart you can see how many tonnes of CO2 have been generated by a specific division of our company.

* Upstream chain refers to emissions generated by upstream process chains, such as the extraction of fuels.
** Remote heating refers to the heat supply that provides buildings with ambient heat and hot water.


We intend to reduce our CO2 consumption in the long term. To enable us to do this, our consumption is divided into three defined areas, called scopes. These divide our emissions into areas over which we have a direct influence (Scope 1 and 2), such as electricity and energy suppliers, and over which we have an indirect influence (Scope 3), such as our employees' commute to and from the office. This allocation will enable us to identify targeted measures, so that we can reduce our CO2 emissions over the next few months.

A data center in a wind turbine

Since 2020, the windCORES project, operated by the wind farm Westfalenwind, enabled us to locate one of our data centers directly inside a wind turbine. In this way, we use the clean energy directly where it’s generated. This project is a genuine innovation and totally unique worldwide.

What we don't save through reduction, we compensate 100 percent with carbon offset projects. Carbon offset projects have been shown to save greenhouse gases. This is an important contributor to combating global warming. To ensure that we didn't miss any aspects in our calculations, we further compensate around 20 percent above the actual calculated value. That's a total of 830.4 tonnes of CO2. Together, all of us Zattooies decided not only to support climate offset projects worldwide, but also to support the people on the ground. The Zattoo team voted and two projects were selected.

Collecting plastic to save the world's oceans

Over 8 million tonnes of plastic waste end up in the ocean every year. The infrastructure for proper disposal is often lacking, especially in developing countries. By 2050, there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish. The Plastic Bank project not only enables us to contribute to cleaner oceans, but also to support people who collect the plastic waste. They do this in exchange for money, food or drinking water in Haiti, Indonesia, Brazil and the Philippines, at local collection points. We offset part of our CO2 consumption via a wind farm in the Philippines. For each offset ton of CO2, 10 kilograms of plastic waste is collected. In this way, Zattoo helps to properly dispose of more than 4,000 kilograms of plastic waste from the oceans every year.

Planting trees to improve our climate

Germany is one of the most wooded countries in the EU. However, even here forest fires caused by drought and heatwaves, as well as pests, weaken the tree population and contribute to the decline of the forests. Especially widespread tree species such as Spruce, which cannot reach the deeper water-drenched layers of soil due to shallow root systems, are adversely affected. Our regional forestation projects in Germany conserve our native forests. They are important for effective adaptation to climate change. In order to compensate for our CO2 consumption, we also support an internationally-recognized forest conservation project in Brazil. In addition, for each compensated tonne of CO2, we plant a tree in a German forest. So, that equals 415 new trees in 2021.
