#GreenStreaming

Our Earth Day 2021 theme week.
Find out more about climate-neutral streaming and how you can make a contribution.

We're Reforesting.
1 Free Month = 1 Tree

To reduce CO2 emissions, we will plant one tree per free month of Zattoo Ultimate or Premium during the week of April 19-25. Learn more about how many trees we will plant, and where they will be located.

Our tree donation

For every free month of Premium or Ultimate started between April 19 and April 25, we will plant a new tree via the organization Plant-for-the-Planet. With every tree planted, we collectively contribute to the mitigation of our climate. Trees absorb CO2, the greenhouse gas, and release oxygen. This allows the temperatures on our planet to remain stable. The more trees on our planet, the more effectively our climate is mitigated. On the map, you can see how many trees we will plant and where they will be located.

Tree Adoption in Uganda

With your help, we’re now supporting the “Tree Adoption” project in Uganda. This youth-centered NGO has been working since 2012 to bring people and nature into harmony. Through activities such as tree planting, the project helps small-scale farmers deal with the consequences of climate change. At the same time, the project empowers young people in Uganda’s rural communities through education and training to establish and manage indigenous tree nurseries and tree farms.

5 tips for climate-friendly TV at home

In addition to donating a tree, there are a few things you can do in your everyday life to make your home TV climate-friendly. We’ll show you how to do it here.

Electronic cable

1. Green electricity from your socket

Using renewable energies is one of the most important steps to stop climate change. Because, unlike fossil fuels like coal or natural gas, renewable energy is clean, safe and available to us indefinitely. By switching to a green electricity provider, you can use your electrical appliances in the future with hydropower, solar and wind energy, biomass or geothermal energy. Changing your own electricity provider is not that difficult. Once you have signed a new contract, the new provider will take care of everything else within a few weeks. It’s important to look for the look for the “naturemade” quality label, which is awarded by the Association for Environmentally Sound Energy (VUE). This way, you can be sure that your electricity really is green.

2. Saving electricity = saving money

You can also protect the climate by reducing your electricity consumption. This is not only good for our climate, but also for your wallet. Whether it’s a laptop, smartphone or electric toothbrush, once your electronic device is fully charged, you should unplug it. Otherwise, the electricity is still flowing, which not only pollutes the environment, but also costs a lot of money. According to the Federal Environment Agency, four power supplies consume an average of 175 kilowatt hours per year. In addition, electronic devices such as TVs, printers and monitors also consume electricity in standby mode. You can easily interrupt the flow of electricity by using power strips that have an on-off switch. Or, you can simply pull the plug when you’re not using your device.

3. Use energy-efficient TVs

Many people also pay attention energy consumption when buying a new TV. The energy efficiency classes according to the EU label are an important decision-making aid here. A+++ devices have the highest efficiency class. When you buy a new TV, it should at least belong to the A+ category. The label also shows the annual power consumption and the power consumption in watts. The older your device, the more power it likely consumes. According to experts, a device that is around 12 years old consumes around 392 kilowatt hours per year, while a device in the A+++ category consumes only 157 kWh. Looking at the current electricity prices, you can also save quite a bit of money here.

4. Give electrical appliances a second life

Another way to protect the climate is to buy used electronics. According to Back Market, an online store for used electronic products, 80 percent of the CO2 emissions generated during the life cycle of a smartphone happen during its manufacture. The same is true for other electronics such as tablets, laptops, TVs and game consoles. So, by choosing used electronics to stream your video content, you can save a lot of CO2.

5. Saving energy on the go

In a study, the German Federal Environment Agency determined that video streaming generates significantly more CO2 when using a mobile network than when using an Internet connection. For example, data transmission with 4G emits 13 grams of CO2 per hour, and with 3G, as much as 90 grams. Data transmission with 5G is significantly better. This only generates around 5 grams of CO2 per hour and is on a par with home Internet use via fiber optics or copper cable, which emit between 2 and 4 grams of CO2 per hour. If you want to stream on the go, you can still do something for the climate. By reducing the resolution when streaming on your mobile device, you also reduce the amount of data being transferred. This produces less climate-damaging CO2, consumes less data volume and conserves your battery. With Zattoo, you can easily use your settings to adjust the resolution of your smartphone or tablet.

What we are already doing:

1. We operate our data centers using green power and even have a data center installed directly beside a wind turbine!

2. Our offices in Zurich and Berlin are also powered by green electricity.

3. We ensure proper waste disposal and offer alternative vegetarian and vegan menus to our employees.

4. This year, we will further reduce our CO2 consumption, for example by applying policy guidelines to cut back the number of flights taken by our employees.

5. We are planting trees for YOU!

"Sustainability i.e., acting in an ecologically sustainable manner, is something we have explicitly incorporated in our values. This topic was brought forward on the initiative of our team and we intend to pursue it over the long term. With the support of our colleagues at Leaders for Climate Action, we will take steps to reduce our ecological footprint. With projects like our data center at the Westfalenwind wind farm, we would like to act as an inspiration for other companies.”

Climate-neutral television with Zattoo

At Zattoo, we emit around 692 tons of CO2 every year. The large quantities of data needed for streaming consume a great deal of electricity and as a result, this also generates CO2 emissions. However, CO2 emissions are also caused by our own company operations. What we do not save by making reductions, we compensate for in full by supporting certified carbon offset projects. You can get more information about our carbon-neutral streaming from our website.
