Road to the World Cup final: the matches explained

Road to the World Cup final: the matches explained

13 teams from Europe, 5 from South America, 5 from Africa and 4 each from Asia, North America, and Central America are playing in the World Cup. As the host country, Russia is also the tournament’s organiser. There are 8 groups in total, A to H. During the first round, each team plays all other teams in the group, resulting in 6 games per group. The top two teams from each group move on to the second round. The deciding factor here is the number of points. In a tie, ranking is determined by goal difference. From the second round onwards, play enters the knock-out stage and it becomes a single-elimination tournament. Only one game is played and the losing team drops out. If no one has won during regular playing time, the game goes into 2 15-minute overtimes. If the game is still undecided, there is an 11-metre penalty shootout. This stage ensures no team plays another game against a team from their preliminary group until the final.

The official World Cup logo

In October 2014, Russia unveiled the official logo for the World Cup in the most spectacular fashion: three Russian cosmonauts on the International Space Station presented the emblem from roughly 400 kilometres above Earth. The shape is based on the World Cup trophy and incorporates themes from icon painting and space exploration. According to Sepp Blatter, it represents the heart and soul of Russia. The World Cup is scheduled in 11 different cities from 8 June to 8 July 2018 and is also the first major football event to take place in the world’s biggest country. Cancel at any time.

Mascot, World Cup song and fan fever

A wolf called Zabivaka beat a tiger and cat to become the World Cup mascot. Zabivaka means "the one who scores". The official wolf mascot wears the Russian national colours and sunglasses. The official World Cup logo is inspired by world famous Russian artistic traditions, takes the shape of the trophy and bears the national colours. The "magic ball" crowning the emblem represents magic and dreams. This year’s World Cup song "Colors" is by US singer and songwriter Jason Derulo.
