And the winner is…

T-shirt design

Just kidding. There's no winner - yet. Our t-shirt contest still has not borne those mind-boggling, cuckoo, loopy, ditzy, loony designs we were hoping for. We'll let you recover from all the hugs, kisses, and roses you hoped for received today, and grant 10 more days to send in your proposals.

Billag yes? Billag no? Billag maybe!

20minuten, a free Swiss newspaper, published an article today covering Zattoo, in which the journalist kind of made me state that consumption of TV through Zattoo is not subject to the Swiss TV and Radio tax (a.k.a. Billag fee).

Reality is a bit more complex. We talked to Bakom back in November 06. Their press contact told us that "Zattoo is the unique single only service in Switzerland that is Billag-free. Here's why: The ruling by Bakom regarding Billag fees is actually in favor of Billag and makes it very clear that if a subscription fee is charged by the provider, even for Internet TV, then Billag must be paid as well. Zattoo, however, being subscription (fee) free, is the sole exception."

What do we think? There's a good chance (98%) that you're paying the fee already, so no reason to worry or to do anything. If you never bothered to pay Billag for your good old television set, the Zattoo experience of television anytime anywhere should be a good reason to start doing so...

Bringin’ down da house

Zurich Space

We have reasons to celebrate:

  1. Zattoo's latest release seems to be a hit among users
  2. Sugih, Zattoo's co-founder and CTO, left cold and snowy Ann Arbor to enjoy a few cold and snowy days in Switzerland
  3. We'll be moving to new, larger offices soon

Since we already share TV with you, we thought we'd also share a couple of beers and invite every Zattoo user who happens to be in Zurich on Friday, February 2, to join our not-too-wild-but-hopefully-cozy-and-fun Housewarming party, starting at 18:00. You'll find us at the Elias-Canetti-Strasse 7, right behind Zurich-Oerlikon train station.

If you plan on attending, drop us a comment here, and let us know how many martinis, shaken, not stirred beers we should set aside for you.

Parlez-vous français? Parla italiano?

team

Then the latest Zattoo release is for you! We added 19 top channels, taking special care of our French and Italian friends. You can now enjoy camembert on a baguette and sip champagne while you watch France 2, France 3, France 4, France 5, TF1 or M6. More into spaghetti and lambrusco? Then accompany them with Rai 1, Rai 2, Rai 3, Canale 5, Italia 1 and Rete 4.

But we didn't stop there. German-speaking Zattoonatics have been blessed with kabel eins, RTL II, DSF, Bloomberg Deutschlang, n-tv, and ORF 2. While for the fans of the Queen, porridge and Guinness, we are happy to announce BBC Prime.

2.2.2 doesn't only bring new channels, but also an updated look for the channel browser, minor GUI bugs fixes and improvements, and better support for dual screen displays. The next release will address Vista compatibility.

Wondering who's behind this bonanza? I guess it's the guys in the picture (and a few more missing).

Zattoo - I love yoooo!

Tee Shirt

Thanks to Javier for coming up with this slogan, which we like very much. We like it that much that we decided to put it on a t-shirt. So, all you wet t-shirts contestants t-shirt designers out there, get your digital pencils ready, and email us your entry until February 9.

The rules are simple: front-, back- or both-side design; any choice of color; must use the Zattoo TV; must use the "Zattoo - I love yoooo!" slogan; submission must be a GIF, JPG, or PNG image.

We'll announce the winner here on February 14, the day of savage consumerism love.

Kyrill sweeps Zattoo

BSOD

Storm "Kyrill" did no good to trees and power lines across Europe, and it also hit our infrastructure hard. If you've been experiencing the "Black Screen of Doom" over the last few hours, rest assured we're fixing it. SFi, TSI1, TSI2, TSR1, and TSR2 should all be back soon.

Call for Testers

Blue Screen

You don’t fear Blue Screens of Death or kernel panics, your computer is a natural extension of your arm (watch the video!), and you are fluent in both English and Computerish.

Then you’re the perfect candidate for our Beta Program. As we gear up to release a major new version of Zattoo, we’d like to have some of the existing Zattoo users in Switzerland try it out first and help us making it better before unleashing it in the wild.

If you’re interested, sign up here. You’ll get our endless gratitude and, if we become famous, we’ll say "Thank you!" in public.

UPDATE: Thanks to all those who signed up! We had an overwhelmig response and are closing the submission form for now. If you didn't make it for this round, stay tuned for the next one...

Share new channels with your friends

Zattoo has been up and running for a while now. Since our debut in June, we've been so busy rubbing off the rough edges, that we haven't even had time to set up a proper blog. But here we are now. We have a few sweet things to announce and just couldn't wait any longer:

You asked for it, you got it
We have always been aiming to provide an extended channel lineup, and here it is. Zattoo just recently went from 4 to more than 20 channels. You can now enjoy more news, music, sports and shows right there on your laptop.

TV for free
Just in case you're wondering, Zattoo is still free. And it should remain like that for the foreseable future. Also when we'll add a payment system, we'll continue to offer certain channels for free, and provide a range of paid services to satisfy all of your exotic channel needs.

Share the wealth
Don't keep Zattoo all for yourself. We made it much easier to share Zattoo with the ones you care about. Simply login to your account, click on "Invite a friend", and share TV-to-go with your friends.

If you're reading this from somewhere outside of Switzerland... sorry, you're out of luck. Right now, Zattoo is only available in the country of chocolate and cuckoo clocks. We'll be expanding to the rest of Europe soon though, so stay tuned!
