Zattoo: how to fix when broken

This is a serious post for once, so let’s get right down to it. Some of you are ready to do black voodoo on the new player because it just won’t work anymore since you upgraded. Yes, that sucks, and we’re fully aware of how desperate you are.
The big question is: What to do about it? And can we please talk to somebody who actually knows what they’re talking about, instead of getting fed helpless lines by a sweet-talking communications chick who's clearly out of her league? YES, YOU CAN.
Okay, your player doesn’t work. So let’s take it step-by-step:
- If you get "Zattoo failed to load due to The type initializer for 'xf1881ae45f713d1f' threw an exception" AND have Windows, please make sure that you have installed the latest updates for your computer's operating system. Ask your computer vendor on how to proceed. Uninstall/remove the Zattoo player. Download and install .NET framework 2.0. Restart your computer. Download a fresh, original copy of the Zattoo player from our website. If this works for you, please let our support know.

Please send an email to our support team and answer the following questions:
- Which operating system are you running?
- Do you know if it's a 32-bit or 64-bit operating system?
- Which error message do you get?
- Describe the behavior of the player as accurately as possible
The more we know, the better we can isolate the problem and find a solution.
- Worst case, we can offer you a downgrade to 3.1.1, but it will be a bit of a rough ride to later upgrade again to 3.2.0.

Switzerland: Supersize Zattoo

Bigger IS better. That’s why Zattoo has decided to collaborate with Swisscom (they would probably see it the other way around) to bring users with a Swisscom VDSL connection a better Zattoo. So if you’re one of those lucky people – or plan to be – and if you happen to live in Switzerland you’ll get the 20 most popular Zattoo channels in the 576x528 resolution, instead of in the usual economical also very satisfying 352x288 one.

Ein Stück Spanien für Deutschland

Es wird genommen, es wird gegeben: nach dem heimlifeiss schnellen Abgang von zwei spanischen Sendern vor einigen Wochen gibts jetzt ein Ersatz-Zückerchen: Aragón Televisión, Extremadura TV und ETB Sat sind ab sofort aufgeschaltet für Fans der Iberischen Halbinsel, Sprachinteressierte und Heimweh-Spanier. Und als Bonus-Angebot (wie alle Unternehmen, die etwas auf sich halten, haben auch wir sowas) schalten wir für unsere Russisch-sprechenden Freunde auch R1, einen russischen Sender für Europa, auf.
Und als Vorwegnahme der Fragen zu unserer Senderauswahl, die da ungefähr wären: Wie wählen wir aus, welche Sender wir für ein Land einfangen wollen? Wieso diese Sender und nicht Sender X, Y und Z? (Ich kenn euch doch langsam ...). Here’s how it goes: Wir schauen jeweils, welche Sender uns überhaupt die Rechte für andere Länder erteilen können. Viele Sender haben ja Inhalte, die sie nur in einem Land übertragen dürfen. Die fallen schon von vorneherein weg. Und dann verhandeln wir mit denjenigen, die für andere Länder noch in Frage kommen. Wenn wir uns einigen können, dann fällt ein bisschen Glück für alle ab.
Zattoo: test the new Player version!

A preview of the new Player version is now out and ready to be put to your tough test. Once again we're looking for users who are willing to try the new version before we roll it out to everybody else out there. There's no danger of catching a nasty little bug, but the version may be more unstable, and it will have some hicks still, which we would be very happy to hear about from you.
So if you're feeling adventurous, have nerves of steel, and are eager to try out a couple of new features, then go ahead (the link to the Tech Preview can be found below the main download button).
And here's what will await you:
* User channel ordering: you can now make channel groups and shift your channels around with the Channel Manager (yes, we do listen to you!)
* Localized Player: the Player is now also available in German, Spanish and French
* Teletext: some channels offer Teletext, to be accessed from View / View Teletext
Please let us know via the feedback option on the Player what you think and what doesn't work!

Deutschland: Zattoo jetzt mit Radio

Mit den zwanzig ersten Radiostationen der Öffentlich-Rechtlichen ist die Kanalliste noch etwas voller geworden. Angefangen wird unter anderem mit radioeins, SWR 3, 1LIVE, YOU FM; die restlichen Radiosender werden nach und nach aufgeschaltet.
Die Kanalliste ist dir zu unordentlich? Für Bürotischaufräumer, Schubladenpolizisten und Sockensortierer gibts mit dem Kanalmanager die Möglichkeit, Ordnung zu schaffen. Klicke im Menu oben auf “View”, “Manage Channels” und wähle die Sender aus, die du auch sehen willst. Und dies speziell für Bindungs-Neurotiker: Die Liste kann jederzeit wieder geändert werden. Das ist keine Wahl fürs Leben.

The last thing you feel like doing on Monday morning is going to work. Just as you begin summing up the energy for a new working week, you step out the shower and the phone rings. …*sigh*. There you are standing in your birthday suit, dripping water on the carpet while your boss tells you what he thinks of your work last week.
If you’re anything like me, just before heading out, you sit down to a strong cup of coffee and power up your laptop to see what the day has in store for you. While cursing at your emails, you flick on Zattoo and those Monday morning blues soon disappear… Breakfast on the table and now breakfast TV on your PC! It’s just a case of choosing between Bill Turnbull and Fiona Phillips. Ooh the decisions…
So there you have it. Now our friends in the UK can Zattoo BBC1, BBC2, ITV1, Channel 4, Five and lots of other fantastic channels. We’ve got all your favourite films, news, sports, drama, game shows – right there where you are.

The Zattoo website (finally) enters the 21st century

Yes to all of the below:
* It was challenging to find information on the old website (we thought so too)
* The channel list was not always up-to-date
* And the FAQ section was difficult to search through for frustrated people in a hurry
Enough of the self-flagellation. NOW THINGS HAVE CHANGED. We’ve become more structured (very possibly due to the increase in women in the company – hint, hint, male colleagues. And yes, it wouldn’t hurt you to clean up after yourselves in the kitchen), acquired a glossy, flashy new century look, complete with interactivity and a cute little TV avatar dude, and it’s finally possible to see all the channels we carry in every single country we’re live in. And the whole thing is in all the languages of the countries that we’ve launched in so far. Which made the web team briefly wonder about whether it was worth the hassle of launching in further countries – but no. The Italians alone would never forgive us.

Just to share with you that for the first time I am experiencing ZATTOO Live TV experience in the TGV at 300km/h thanks to internal Wifi access (free for the moment). Quality and stability of the signal is great. Switching time also great!

The fastest ever use of Zattoo on record was Olivier’s Zattoo experience on the TGV at the end of February. It’s hard to top 300km/h as long as Zattoo is not available on flights. Which makes us wonder if there are any other records out there. Where, for example, is the weirdest place ever you watched Zattoo? What’s your longest ever Zattoo session? Or do you have a personal Zattoo story you’d like to share?
(Here’s mine, to start it off: Zattoo is also a dating agency. My fella read an article on us in the Süddeutsche Zeitung, written by Simon Feldmer, and then contacted us. And things took their course and Simon has my eternal gratitude ...)
